The paper deals with recovery type a posteriori error estimates in finite element methods. Here, the authors provide a brief survey on a posteriori error estimates including some recent development in the field and emphasize on recovery type error estimators. The popular Zienkiewicz-Zhu (ZZ) patch recovery estimators to demonstrate some features of recovery type error estimators is used.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEMain result: The authors establish both stability and consistency results for estimator under arbitrary grids. The analysis explains partially the reasons for the robustness of the ZZ patch recovery error estimator.
