Instuctions for arithmetic with Arabic numerals: Reflections on the edition of a manuscript from the middle of the 16th Century (English)

The author prepared (in 1996) together with Ulrich Reich an edition of an anonymous mathematical manuscript from the 16th century which is located in the municipal archives in Dortmund (Germany). The manuscript is probably a Latin draft of a German reckon book of 1541/42 by Johann Albert from Wittenberg. This book served the distribution of the knowledge in computing with hindu-arabic numerals. Albert's book had 40 editions in the 16th century alone and was a serious competitor to the today much more known books by Adam Ries. Schilp finds in the manuscript also certain beginnings of theoretical mathematics, for example early versions of the multiplication point.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0964.00032].
