Shear (English)

The authors focus attention on the notion of shear as it generally appears in the nonlinear theory of strains in a deformable solid. The work deals with the pure kinematics of deformation theory, and establishes general kinematical properties of shear in finite-deformation theory. Among the notions that receive special treatment, one can identify those of unsheared pairs in a given plane, the maximum shear sustained in a given plane for a given angle between two line elements, the global extremal shear for a given such angle, pairs of unsheared material elements, unsheared triads, and the shear of planar elements. Many results follow the authors' recent researches on general kinematics and deformation theory of continua.
