The Drinfeld center is generalized from tensor categories (= one object bicategories) to general bicategories. There is shown that this center is a braided tensor category and, using a spectral sequence, there are computed two its primary invariants: the abelian monoid of iso-classes of objects and the abelian group of automorphisms of the unit object.
