This monograph covers some modern theoretical results on circular data analysis. The goal of the authors is to mention the limitations of the standard linear statistical methods in this area of directional data, to present some basic ideas, and to discuss some of the newer methodologies.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe first seven chapters provide an introduction to this novel area and up-to-date coverage of circular modeling and analysis. In the next four chapters, the focus shifts to more recent research in such areas as change-point problems, predictive distributions, outliers, and circular correlations and regression. The material of these chapters reflects the authors' own research interests and is given in the monograph literature for the first time. The final chapter reviews some other interesting topics, such as classification and discriminant analysis, factorial designs, and an entropy-based test for circular normal distributions (CND).NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEWhenever possible, the authors attempt to analyze the methods in the framework of optimal statistical inference, e.g., when they examine the CND as a member of the curved exponential family. Since solutions to many directional data problems are not obtainable in simple closed analytical form, related computer software is essential for practitioners. A package of computational subroutines in S-Plus is included which allows users to analyze their own data sets. Another recent book in this field is that of \textit{K.V. Mardia} and \textit{P.E. Jupp}, Directional statistics. 2nd ed. (2000; Zbl 0935.62065).NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEContents: Ch. 1, Introduction. Ch. 2, Circular probability distributions. Ch. 3, Some sampling distributions.
