[For the first edition (1994) see Zbl 0852.65001]. In this new edition various changes have been made, for instance the programs correspond to the version 5.x of MATLAB and four new chapters have been added. Thus updated, the book has preserved its original character and serves even better its intended readership, students of computationally oriented courses with emphasis on physics and engineering applications. These new chapters deal with eigenvalue applications, beam flexure, analytic functions and nonlinear optimization. The programs are now available on the web page of the book. The sample programs that I tried out worked without problems also with the version 6.x of MATLAB.
