Analytical fluid dynamics. (English)

Besides appendices given at the end, the book is divided into five main parts: (i) Basic concepts; (ii) Advanced gas dynamics; (iii) Viscous-inviscid fluid dynamics; (iv) Exact solutions for viscous flows, and (v) Laminar boundary-layer theory for steady two-dimensional or axisymmetric flows. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe first part consists of four chapters which deal with constitutive relations, governing equations (namely, continuity equation, equations of motion, and energy equation), thermodynamics and general properties of fluid flows. The second part discusses in eight chapters derivable consequences of Euler equations, shock waves, hodograph transformation theory, substitution principle, basic gas dynamic theory, sweep in a supersonic flow, interaction of expansion and shock waves, and finally unsteady one-dimensional flows. The third part includes two chapters: Navier-Stokes equations in orthogonal curvilinear coordinates, and a chapter examining forces and moments that can act on a body or a surface. A number of applications are also presented. The fourth part classifies exact solutions of Navier-Stokes equations in the following three chapters: Rayleigh flows, Couette flows, and axisymmetric stagnation point flows. The topics discussed in the final fifth part are: incompressible flow over a semi-infinite flat plate, boundary layers using matched asymptotic expansion, incompressible boundary-layer theory, compressible boundary-layer theory, supersonic boundary layer, and finally second-order boundary-layer theory. At the end, ten appendices detail various concepts and equations.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEIt is a very well written book, and it would be of immense use for post-graduate students and for fluid mechanics instructors.
