In presenting linear signals and systems (LSS), there are two ways: a) giving in a single volume analog and discrete LSS or to elaborate the material in two volumes, one for the analog LSS and the other for the discrete LSS. The author of the present volume chose to write a single volume for analog systems, an opinion to which we adhere. Let us explain our opinion. When restricting the interest to communication or processing systems, a single volume to cover the analog and the discrete case is a natural approach. But when one is interested in grasping the methods to describe SS which are not necessarily electrical only, separate volumes are needed. And such is the case for the material comprised in the present book. First of all, we point out the modern approach adopted in elaborating the present book: namely, the large use of MATLAB tools to analyze and simulate linear and nonlinear SS.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINETo see what the book offers, we give its contents: (1) Signal Representation; (2) Continuous Systems; (3) Fourier Series; (4) Fourier Transforms and Linear Systems; (5) Laplace Transform and Linear Systems; (6) State-space and Linear Systems; (7) Modeling and Representation of Linear Systems; (8) Introduction to the Design of Systems; (9) Linearization of Nonlinear Systems; Index.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe theory is given at a moderate and comprehensive mathematical level. Numerous examples are provided by the use of MATLAB (full script of commands are given). The drawings are of an excellent quality. We think it is necessary to enumerate some merits of the book (not all of them): a) an adequate presentation of traditional tools (Fourier Series, Fourier Transform), b) a good exposition of the space-state methods; c) modeling linear systems by interconnecting elementary functional blocks; d) filter design; e) linearization of nonlinear systems. Numerous problems are proposed to the students. All this ensures a large amount of potential readers (students or engineers in the electrical, electronic, mechanical, thermal areas). An up to date reference is provided at the end of each chapter. Finally, we think the book is an excellent volume for study; the large area covered by the comprised material and the modern approach adopted ensure its success as a reference book for the analysis of analog systems.
