The Aristotelicity of Thomason's semantics (English)

\textit{S. K. Thomason} [J. Philos. Log. 22, No. 2, 111-128 (1993; Zbl 0798.03015)] developed a semantic analysis for Aristotle's modal syllogisms taking Storrs McCall's formal representation as its base, and answered many of the important interpretive questions McCall left open. The Aristotelicity of Thomason's semantics, however, should be said to depend on how well McCall's axiomatic system represents Aristotle. In this paper the author examines the semantics in terms of Aristotle's original texts, showing how ways we might read them do make the semantics plausible. Several semantical conditions given by Thomason are thus reviewed referring to Aristotle's texts, and the author points out that the semantics brings about some results that sound unAristotelian, for which ways to make it better fit Aristotle are also suggested.
