Birth and posterity of the Lebesgue integral (English)
0 references
The author discusses the after-effects of Henri Lebesgue's integral, which is already contained in Lebesgue's short French publication of 1901 ``On a generalization of the definite integral'' [C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris 132, 1025-1028 (1901; JFM 32.0299.01)]. Kahane deals particularly with functional analysis and probability, esp. the Riesz-Fischer theorem of 1907 and Norbert Wiener's theory of the Brownian motion of the 1920s. The author claims priority for Lebesgue in creating the Borel measure. Lebesgue's note is reproduced as a facsimile. Since it was published in the quick outlet of the French Academy ``Comptes Rendus'', Kahane discusses the importance of that journal as well, which has repeatedly secured priority to mathematical results.
