Problem XIII, related to the theory of equations, was concerned with iterations of functions. A specific question raised in it has found a negative answer but a general idea behind the problem has attracted much attention. Stated as a problem, it is unanswered until now. The author describes its development until 1959 but the study goes on. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINESee also \textit{J. Dixmier}, Cah. Sémin. Hist. Math.
