Problem XIV is concerned with the theory of invariants, then an important part of mathematics. In its literal wording the problem was solved (negatively) by \textit{M. Nagata} in 1966 [Actas Coloq. Int. Geom. Algebr., Madrid 1965, 107-121 (1966; Zbl 0142.28701), see also Am. J. Math. 81, 766-772 (1959; Zbl 0192.13801)] but its other value has consisted in stimulating other problems and relevant research.
