The author presents a history of Hilbert's third problem and discusses its solution. Fundamental references are given. However he does not mention that the problem was formulated by W. Kretkowski on April 20th, 1882 at the meeting of the Faculty of Mathematics and Nature of the Academy of Sciences at Cracow and published in 1883 [see \textit{W. Piotrowski}, Hist. Math. 12, 258-260 (1985; Zbl 0569.01008)]. W. Kretkowski offered for a solution 500 Austrian francs. A partial solution was presented by Ludwik A. Birkenmajer in 1884. However, he never published his results.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0902.00028].
