In this letter to the editor, the author gives a brief overview of his research report [\textit{M.\,Fukushima}, ``Spectral theory of ordinary difference operators of the second order.\ I:\ General theory'', Soka Univ.\ Sci.\ Lab.\ Mimeo-Series, No.\,1, Soka Univ., Tokyo (1971)] and also refers to further generalisations in a subsequent paper [see \textit{M.\,Fukushima}, J.~Math.\ Phys.\ 17, 1064--1072 (1976; Zbl 0333.47015)].
