The authors investigate the stability of steady incompressible flow with heat transfer in a three-dimensional disk reactor. Linear stability analysis leads to an eigenvalue problem that is reformulated by a generalized Cayley transformation. Numerical solution for matrix system of order up to 4 million by using available software packages on a massively parallel computer with 1024 processors detects a Hopf bifurcation for Grashof numbers 14000--14500.
