Francesco Maurolico and the center of gravity of a paraboloid (English)

The study attempts first at elucidating -- as precisely as possible -- the exact data at which Francesco Maurolico discovers the center of gravity of a paraboloid -- was it 1518 or 1548? The demonstration, the results of the investigations were published in \textit{De momentis aequalibus} (in the 3rd and 4th book of the work).NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEIn any case, the discovery of the center of gravity of a paraboloid represents one -- maybe the most important progress in the science of geometry since the times of Archimede.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEAnother work of Maurolico considered in the present study is \textit{De centro solidi parabolae demonstratio acutissima}, devoted to the similitude of situations occurring between the triangle and the paraboloid of revolution.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEOther sections are presenting some ``mysterious interlocutors'' -- probably Adriano Acquaviva, Commandino, Clavius, etc.
