Quantum theory of solids (Q2741546)

This well known textbook which appeared first in 1955 (see the review in Zbl 0068.23207) has been reprinted from the 1974 edition. It introduces to the fundamental concepts and basic technics to solve solid state problems by physical arguments in a graphic manner. After explaining crystal structures on the classical level the the quantum description is introduced and thermal properties are considered. Chapters concerning interactions with electromagnetic radiation, electronic structure, metals, transport phenomena, magnetic properties, ferromagnetism, optical properties, semiconductors and luminescence follow. The final chapter is an outline of superconductivity. The presentation omits deeper mathematical descriptions and does not use methods of quantum field theory. Although it does not contain the developments after 1974, it is, besides of its value as a classic text, still a useful textbook for beginners who want to enter this field.
