Each of the 49 short essays is illustrated by a cartoon and treats a striking mathematical fact, most of them as elementary as the area of a circle or Pythagoras' theorem. Often a whimsical story, with real or imaginary characters, provides a setting; an appendix sorts out fact from fiction and provides brief biographies of historical figures. Topics include area and volume formulae, basic results in trogonometry, exponential and logarithmic functions, a little combinatorics and graph theory, prime numbers, and chance.
