The authors investigate the local hydrodynamics of bubble columns and bubbly pipe flows. It is shown that the radial gas friction distribution and the mean vertical liquid and bubble velocities are identical for both operation modes except for particular velocity profiles. The similarity holds also for turbulent flows. Measurements of parameters are performed using laser Doppler anemometry and four-point optical fibre for the liquid and for the gas, correspondingly.
