The paper presents a high frequency analysis of waveguides which are invariant in the propagation direction and which are composed of a stratified medium with a compact perturbation in the transverse section. The assumption of weak guidance allows to reduce the problem to a two-dimensional eigenvalue problem for a scalar field. The vectorial problem will be studied in a forthcoming paper. The limit of the guided modes (as the frequency tends to infinity) is characterized in terms of solutions to Dirichlet eigenproblems.
