Let \(G\) be the fundamental group of a compact surface \(\Sigma\) with basepoint \(x\) and let \(H_1\), \(H_2\) be finitely generated subgroups of \(G\). The author investigates the following problem: Does there exist an automorphism \(\alpha\) of \(G\) such that~\(\alpha(H_1)=H_2\)?
