The book is divided into two halves. The first one (chapters 1 to 9) deals with the fundamental concepts of XML and the core Java APIs for handling XML. For each of the three XML manipulation APIs (Simple API for XML (SAX), Document Object Model (DOM), and JDOM), one chapter deals with the basics, another one with more advanced topics. In a transition chapter, JAXP is introduced, an abstraction layer over SAX and DOM. The final five chapters deal with specific XML topics such as XML-based web publishing frameworks (using Apache Cocoon for illustration purposes), XML Remote Procedure Calls (XML-RPC), Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), management and description of web services based on UDDI and WSDL, Java Architecture for XML Data Binding (JAXB), and a look on business-to-business applications based on content syndication. Two appendices detail all the classes, interfaces, and methods available for use in the SAX 2.0, DOM Level 2, JAXP 1.1, and JDOM 1.0 (Beta 7) APIs, as well as the features and properties available to SAX 2.0 parser implementations.
