The authors define an orientation and degree with values in \(\mathbb{Z}\) for a class of nonlinear Fredholm maps of index zero between Banach spaces (and more generally, Banach manifolds). These notions are applied for obtaining some local and global bifurcation results for a class of maps between Banach spaces (Banach manifolds). The comparison with the results [\textit{J. Pejsachowicz} and \textit{P. Rabier}, J. Anal. Math. 76, 289-319 (1998; Zbl 0932.47046)] is given. It is shown that the authors results are more general.
