The recovery of the potential in the plasma-wave equation and of the wave speed in the variable-speed wave equation is considered in terms of the backscattering amplitude. For compactly supported potentials and also for wave speeds that may differ from a constant only within a bounded region, the author uses the Lax-Phillips theory in order to show that the recovery is unique. The author also provides an outline to recover the singularities of a potential from the singularities of its backscattering data.
