The author extends the factorization method to identify an obstacle \(\Omega\) imbedded in an homogeneous half-space from measurements of either the near field or the far field of the scattered waves. All combinations of boundary conditions on the plane \(x_3 = 0\) and on \(\partial\Omega\) are treated. It is emphasized that no a priori knowledge of the number of components of \(\Omega\) or the kind of boundary condition is needed. This paper is of purely analytical character and contains no numerical results.
