The study of the mapping class group is classical and goes back to works by Fricke, Artin and many others. The aim of the paper under review is the study of the algebraic structure of the hyperelliptic mapping class group of Klein surfaces. This study turns out to be closely related to the mapping class group of punctured discs. The main result of the paper provides a presentation by generators and relations for the hyperelliptic mapping class group of surfaces of prescribed topological type. Finally, the authors obtain some applications, in particular they determine under which conditions the hyperelliptic mapping class group is finite.
