Consider a multicomponent system maintained by an age replacement policy with parameter \(\theta\) and costs associated with each preventively replaced component and with each component replaced after failure. The problem dealt with is to determine the value \(\theta\) so as to minimize the expected cost per time unit in the long run. The paper presents an estimator for the gradient of the cost function based on the concept of weak derivatives.
