Bay area rapid transit district advanced automated train control system -- case study description (English)

The paper under review is a very felicitous example in the training \` to reason out' in detail the process of the design of a control system.NEWLINENEWLINEBy the case study the authors informally describe the design of a simplified version of a subsystem of the Advanced Automated Train Control (AATC) System. The last one was developed in reality for the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system which provides commuter rail service for a part of California's San Francisco bay area. The presented case study deals with the subsystem responsible for control of the speed and acceleration for the trains in the BART system. The paper is organized in the following way. Brief description of the BART system and informal specifications for the AATC system are given. Inputs and outputs of the control algorithm realized by the subsystem are specified and described. Physical performance of the train in the responce to the commands is analysed and the worst case stopping profile is created and investigated. Quantitative quality and safety metrics of the designed subsystem are demonstrated. A list of miscellaneous questions and answers is enclosed.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0967.00027].
