This is a reprint from the collection ``A jar in Tennessee'' edited by \textit{F. J. Craveiro de Carvalho} and \textit{Jorge Picado} (Coimbra 2001; Zbl 0962.01015). The questions posed by the interviewers address some milestones in the life of J. P. Bourguignon. He gives very interesting comments on his role in the May 1968 events and the revision of the mathematics curriculum at the Ecole Polytechnique, his research on Riemannian structures, his responsibilities as President of EMS and Director of IHES and his motivations to produce mathematical videos and publish interviews with great mathematicians himself.
