Recent results on optimal curves (English)

The author analyses the recent results concerning the conditions under which a curve is a solution of a problem consisting in minimization of a real functional depending on a family of curves defined on \({\mathbb{R}^n}\). The evolution of the subject from variational calculus to optimal control theory is presented in an accessible form. There are compared different results obtained during the time and many interesting historical considerations are made.
