The paper is a survey on controllability. The Introduction presents definitions, motivations, physical models, historical notes and applications. The next three sections refer to abstract linear systems, linear systems in finite dimensions and linear systems in infinite dimensions. Nonlinear systems are discussed in Section 5. The author points out that the study of controllability is based on techniques and results of algebra, analysis and geometry.
