The main result of this paper describes how information about the size of the centre of a connected compact Lie group can be obtained from simple numerical information about its Weyl group. The beauty of this result is very much enhanced by the authors' style of mathematics (as they say, `we are particularly interested in minimizing the amount of case-by-case consideration') and of exposition, giving a generous amount of background.
