This paper is a survey on recent results in the theory of the so-called half-factorial domains. The theory essentially sprang out of a result by \textit{L. Carlitz} on algebraic number fields with class number two [Proc. Am. Soc. 11, 391-392 (1960; Zbl 0203.33101)] and two subsequent papers by \textit{A. Zaks} [Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 82, 721-723 (1976; Zbl 0338.13020) and Isr. J. Math. 37, 281-302 (1980; Zbl 0509.13017)]. The bibliography includes 52 items.
