This is a second edition of a well-known text on statistical mechanics. It is primarily oriented towards the interests of theoretical chemists. The laws of quantum and classical mechanics are introduced more or less simultaneously; the authors stress the similarities between the two approaches. Simplicity of presentation is the avowed goal of the authors. Considerable space is devoted to the calculation of thermodynamic functions for perfect gases. As in the first edition [Wiley, New York, 1940], many advanced topics, e.g., the Onsager-Machlup theory, are deliberately omitted.
