The conjecture, which appeared in a letter from Goldbach to Euler, is that every even integer greater than 3 is a sum of two primes. The paper reviews some weaker results obtained by Hardy-Littlewood, Vinogradov, Deshouillers et al, Ramaré, Chen, Brun, and Suzuki.
