The article gives detailed information on the history of Russian and Soviet mathematics between 1850 and 1975, with emphasis on institutional and biographical aspects. Analysis profits from the author's knowledge of the Russian language and from contacts to the Soviet Union in several decades. Vogt argues that political oppression in the Soviet Union was less palpable in mathematics than in some other sciences (172). She mentions, however, detrimental academic anti-semitism also in the 1960s through the 1980s, without going much into causes for that phenomenon. A useful appendix on dates and institutions concludes the paper.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0969.01034].
