The paper deals with the theory of integral closure of ideals and modules. The authors describe the recent developments and show how to apply them to the wide spectrum of problems connected with equisingularity of analytic functions and of analytic sets. Their approach is based on the fact that many equisingularity conditions such as Whitney's, depend on controlling limiting linear structures and the title-theory provides tools for studying them.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe appendix deals with the new (geometric) proofs of two theorems determining the dimension of the ``exceptional'' fiber of the generalized conormal bundle.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0968.00034].
