The Kylix book consists mainly of three sections: an introduction to Object Pascal, the programming language Kylix is based on, a guided tour through the IDE and an overview about Linux. Furthermore there are some examples and appendixes. Even if the title of the book addresses to professional developers from the point of the view of the reviewer the book is interesting for beginners as well. A big part of the book deals with the introduction in Pascal and features of Object Pascal. The explanations are rich on details and very well and so suited for beginners. This leads to the fact that Shemitz book can not be seen as a reference book for more experienced programmers. It helps Delphi-Programmers who want to change to Kylix (which is simply spoken Delphi for Linux). They will find some useful information. Shemitz shows a lot of details to Delphi-Programmers that will be new to them, if them. Examples are inodes, the special hierarchy for permission that is used to control the file access and the signal API that allows to access processes. It is demonstrated how these new features can be applied. Over all Kylix: The professional Developer's Guide and Reference can be recommended as a book to learn how to work with Kylix under Linux. It is written in a clear style and easy to read. Unfortunately the title is a little bit misleading. Professional developers might want to have more clipped information. There is to much detailed beginners information and to few expert knowledge for them. Beginners might be rejected by the title but the book could help them a lot.
