The author proves some results on Mawhin's coincidence degree for pairs of operators, with a particular emphasis on homogeneous operators. The periodic problem for functional differential equations is discussed as application. This extends previous work of \textit{A. Capietto, J. Mawhin} and \textit{F. Zanolin} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 329, 41-72 (1992; Zbl 0748.34025)] and [Lect. Notes Math. 1475, 76-87 (1991; Zbl 0806.34059)].
