Relationships describing the behaviour of amplitudes of velocity disturbances in a steady stratified fluid are determined by using the method of multiple scale expansions. Different steps of the final stage of degeneration are considered. The decay rates of different types of motions (internal waves, layer and vortical structures) are compared to each other. The critical values of horizontal sizes of ~disturbances are found. This allows to determine the long-lived disturbances.
