This paper is a rather concise review of the following topics: NEWLINENEWLINE1. A thermodynamical analysis of classical supergravity on 5-dimensional Anti-deSitter (AdS) and Schwarzschild-AdS backgrounds exhibits 4-dimensional temperature dependence of the entropy in a certain temperature regime; on the other hand there is evidence of 10-dimensional behavior of the density of states in a finite energy range of strongly coupled supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in a finite 4-dimensional volume. Both effects are consistent with the AdS/Conformal field theory correspondence first conjectured by \textit{J. M. Maldacena} [Adv. Theor. Math. Phys. 2, No. 2, 231--252 (1998; Zbl 0914.53047)]. The original articles are [\textit{J. L. F. Barbón} and \textit{E. Rabinovici}, Extensivity versus holography in Anti-de Sitter spaces, Nucl. Phys., B 545, No. 1-3, 371--384 (1999; Zbl 0944.81030), and \textit{J. L. F. Barbón, I. I. Kogan} and \textit{E. Rabinovici}, On stringy thresholds in SYM/AdS thermodynamics, Nucl. Phys., B 544, No. 1-2, 104--144 (1999; Zbl 0958.81114)]. NEWLINENEWLINE2. In the presence of D-branes the densities of states of open and closed strings in 10 non-compact space-time dimensions are similar, and a limiting (Hagedorn) temperature may not exist. The details are in [\textit{S. A. Abel, J. L. F. Barbon, I. I. Kogan, E. Rabinovici}, String thermodynamics and D-brane backgrounds, J. High Energy Phys. 1999, No. 4, Paper No. 15, electronic only (1999; Zbl 0953.81074)]. NEWLINENEWLINE3. Finally tentative bulk and world-volume phase diagrams for string theory at small coupling are presented.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0958.00052].
