The authors integrate principal components analysis with canonical analysis to examine some critical aspects of the competitiveness of industrial sectors. The focus is put on factors reflecting internal operational changes which underlie business performance and competitiveness. The analysis extends in two different Greek sectors, the food industry and the beverage industry, over the period 1970-1992. The results are further interpreted in the framework of relevant statistical data, empirical studies and expert opinions.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEDifferent measures of labour productivity, technological innovation and size of firms are used in the applications of principal components analysis. Canonical analysis is then applied to correlate the variables of labour productivity with the other variables. In the case of the food and beverage integrated sector the results of the principal components analysis pinpoint that there are two main principal components: (1) labour productivity and vertical integration; (2) technological innovation and size.
