This book presents the main theoretical results on the finite rank approximation of infinite-dimensional eigenvalue problems. Classical spectral theory, the theory of approximation of bounded operators, and methods for improving the accuracy of spectral approximations are presented. A number of concrete methods for constructing finite rank approximations and the canonical matrix formulation of the eigenvalue problem for matrices are given. The book present contains a number of elementary examples and exercises.
