The present article, with Part II in the subsequent review, discusses Mikhael Gromov's mathematics and its impact from the author's point of view. It is partially based on three interviews with Gromov conducted by Berger, and it first appeared in French in Gaz. Math., Soc. Math. Fr. 76, 25-45 (1998; Zbl 0915.53001) and ibid. 77, 29-53 (1998; Zbl 0915.53002). It was translated into English by Ilan Vardi and adapted by the author.
