David Hilbert (1862-1943) offered a list of twenty three problems which he urged upon the attention of his contemporary mathematicians. These problems went into the folklore of professional mathematicians. The author compares the range of Hilbert's problems and for this purpose he divides his article into six sections viz. (i) Circumstances and publications, (ii) Problems: range and definition, (iii) Hilbert problems, (iv) Place of applied mathematics, (v) Understandable omissions, (iv) Judgements: Hilbert and Poincaré. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEEach section is well written, informative in the sense of historical perspective. It seems to be that this article will be helpful to those who are going to study the history of modern mathematics.
