This review has the intention of outlining some theoretical questions posed by Bose-Einstein condensation. Current understanding of the formation, dynamics and collapse of the condensate is described. A number of unexplored issues is listed.NEWLINENEWLINEFrom a mathematical point of view, the study of Bose-Einstein condensation reveals an important theme: The occurrence of singularities in the course of a dynamical process. Topologically generated singularities are at the heart of nonlinear science. Generation of vortices and their dissipation have received various physical explanations but the whole field still remains wide open, both from the point of view of mathematics and of the underlying physics.
