Anomalous U(1) gauge symmetries can appear both in heterotic and type I string theories. The perturbative heterotic string possesses a single anomalous U(1) with interesting consequences for model building that are well understood. The paper reviews the situation in open string theories, specifically type I and type II orientifolds, where several anomalous U(1) gauge symmetries may be present.
