The authors obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for three disjoint subsets of the complex plane to be the point spectrum, the continuous spectrum, and the residual spectrum of a bounded linear operator on a separable Banach space. More generally, topological characterizations of various kinds of spectra are given for closed densely defined linear operators on separable Banach spaces. Open problems are mentioned.
