Let \(G\) be a nearly simple matrix group, then there is some normal subgroup \(G_0\) of \(G\) such that \(Z:=G\cap\{\text{scalars}\}\leq G_0\), \(G_0/Z\) is nonabelian simple, and \(G_0/Z\leq G/Z\leq\Aut G_0/Z\).NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe author gives a survey on nearly simple matrix groups. He states that it is desirable to divide these groups into three subclasses in order to use appropriate computational techniques. He also suggests to replace the calculation of orders of elements in these groups by linear algebra calculations.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0959.00030].
