The paper presents in detail Gauss' method in marking out orbits. Gauss' calculations were very helpful in finding Ceres. The author gives not only the history of the problem but also successive steps in practical applications of the method. The paper is an extended version of a talk given during the XIVth School of History of Mathematics and has been edited in cooperation of the Commission for History of Mathematics (Polish Mathematical Society) with Witold Wiȩsław (as scientific editor) and Pedagogical University in Zielona Góra with Włodzimierz Odyniec (as technical editor).NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0964.00033].
